May Wellness Habits

Love is in the air!

As the weather continues to increase and the wonders of Nature are brought back to life- May invites a new sense of optimism and vibrance.

Buds are popping up on the trees, birds fill the air with their songs- the energy of May is buzzing with life.

More sunlight brings the feeling of longer, brighter and more joyful days. However, the shorter nights coupled with increasing heat can lead to tossing and turning trying to get comfortable resulting in restless nights.

Be sure to incorporate these tips so that you are able to fully enjoy the enthusiasm that May has to offer.

In the Mind

The anticipation of Summer is at its maximum. Friends make plans to reunite after a long Winter of isolation, looking forward to BBQs and beach days.

With the heat increasing, for people who are out of balance, it can lead to feelings of frustration and increased intensity. Up your self-care and practice patience, try using deep breathing or meditation to support- see tips below.

In the Body

As the heat rises, body fat continues to melt away and the blood continues to become thinner- your body is preparing for the Summer ahead.

You may notice that on hot days that you feel more congested, this is a sign that you have an accumulation of mucous within the body and the warmth is allowing it to flow. Take this month as a opportunity to do one last cleanse before the Summer begins, where your body the body will be too hot and light for a full cleanse.

On a more positive note, the warmth causes the pores to open up and allow your body to release heat through sweating. This increases blood flow to the skin and brings a new radiance to the body.

Be sure to stay hydrated, as you sweat you lose electrolytes as well. Consume 5-10 glasses of fluid and day, ideally water and add lemon or lime with a pinch of salt to stay hydrated and balanced.

Also, check for symptoms such as loose stools, acidity, irritability, anger or even skin conditions and blurry eyes. This could mean that your liver is overheated and overworked, choose a diet and practices to help remain cool and collected this month- see tips below.

The following tips are recommended to help boost vitamin D, cleanse the lymphatic and digestive systems, as well as the sinuses.

Food is Medicine

May brings an increase in moisture and heat. Ayurveda recommends that we choose a diet that balances out these properties so that we can fully reap the joy that is sown this Spring season.

Choose more bitter and astringent foods to help decrease moisture within the body, while also providing lightness and freshness.

  • Salads are key- containing a variety of leafy greens, sprouts and colourful veggies to support cleansing and increase vitality.

Swap pungent herbs and spices for more cooling herbs to help nourish the liver, and support healthy digestion by decreasing heat from within.

  • Fennel, cardamom and cilantro are amazing options.

Slowly start to reintroduce sweet foods as they provide energy and minerals, also called electrolytes. They also contain high amounts of antioxidants that help to support the liver.

  • Fruits such as: berries, kiwi, green mango, and green papaya.

May is the perfect month to reduce the amount of meat you consume. Digestion naturally slows down, by consuming lighter foods it provides relief to an already sluggish system.

  • Try MEATLESS MAY, or reduce your meat intake to certain days of the week.
